Massachusetts' Slots Not Limited to Racetracks28 February 2003MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Boston Herald: "Video slot machines might wind up in locations other than the state's four racetracks if Rhode Island and Connecticut gaming interests refuse Massachusetts' demands for $75 million to keep casino-style gambling out. "Backing off earlier suggestions that `video lottery terminals' would be permitted only at Bay State tracks, Administration and Finance Secretary Eric Kriss and economic development czar Bob Pozen said yesterday that the machines could be put in other locations. Pozen said the budget proposal outlined Wednesday erred in saying that the computerized slot machines would be introduced `at existing gaming sites' - widely interpreted as the state's four racetracks. "…Pozen said the computerized slots could be installed in any community that welcomes them. "Pozen said anywhere from two to six site licenses for slots might be doled out, with as many as 2,000 machines at each site. "…Nor is it clear that gaming operators in Connecticut and Rhode Island would pay the $75 million a year that Gov. Mitt Romney wants…" |
