Massachusetts Casino Cruises Back For Now

MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Gloucester Daily Times: "High-rolling cruises from Gloucester Harbor are expected to resume, but when or aboard what ship remain unclear.

"Atlantic Casino Cruises' slots where silenced Sunday when a federal marshal seized the Ocean Club, the vessel the Gloucester company had used since it started sailing in mid-July.

"The seizure came about an hour before Atlantic Casino had scheduled one of its cruises into federal waters three miles offshore, where gambling -- otherwise illegal in Massachusetts -- is permitted.

"Atlantic Casino leased the Ocean Club from a Florida business, Ocean Club LLC, and the companies have been tangled in a lawsuit since early August.

"…Stephen Ouellette, a local lawyer who represents Ocean Club LLC, said the seizure came after the two could not resolve their differences.

"…The sides were scheduled to meet in federal court in Boston this afternoon, where Atlantic Casino was expected to argue it should be allowed to use the ship.

"But even if it cannot, Atlantic Casino will remain in business, according to its president, Adam Kidan.

"…Kidan called the lawsuit and seizure of the ship `heavy handed tactics.' He said Atlantic Casino is committed to its business in Gloucester.

"Repairs to a ship the venture originally planned to use, the Entertainer, delayed its schedule. The company then leased the Ocean Club, which had mechanical problems of its own…"
