Manitoba Casinos May Be Exempt from Smoking Ban

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – As reported by the CNEWS: "Premier Gary Doer has left a door open to allow smoking in casinos after the rest of the city is forced to butt out on July 1.

"If re-elected, Doer said yesterday the NDP will abide by `the spirit' of the city's indoor smoke ban but refused to say whether the province's two casinos would be forced to comply on the same date as the rest of Winnipeg.

"The province is not required to follow city bylaws in its buildings, which means the Club Regent and McPhillips Street Station casinos could be exempt from the smoking ban if the government chooses not to follow it.

"…Doer said he will have to discuss the situation with the mayor following the June 3 election…"
