Man Sentenced to Life for '93 Gambling Club Massacre

SEATTLE, Washington –As reported by the Associated Press: '"A man convicted of murdering 13 people in the city's worst mass killing was sentenced Monday to 13 consecutive life terms without parole.

"Kwan Fai `Willie' Mak, now 41, was convicted of aggravated first-degree murder and sentenced to death in 1983. A jury found that he and two other men stormed into a gambling club and hog-tied and shot 13 people.

"Mak's death sentence was overturned in 1991 after a judge ruled he hadn't received adequate legal counsel; prosecutors have sought to resentence him ever since.

"Monday's sentence was handed down by King County Superior Court Judge Laura Inveen. In April, she ruled that the death penalty was not an option because jurors hadn't received proper instructions.

"…The massacre `involved 13 execution-style murders and was one of the worst mass murders in U.S. history,' [King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng] said…"
