Malaysia Fights Cybercafe Gambling

MALAYSIA – Jan. 22, 2002 –- As reported by the Malaysian Star: "At least 30 cybercafes in Sabah are nothing more than gambling dens and police are moving in to nab their owners although some have temporarily suspended their businesses, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Yusuff said.

"…Ramli said police would also use the Gaming Houses Act and the Public Entertainment Ordinance against them.

"They would also rely on local council by-laws to seize computer equipment used for gambling in the cybercafes.

"Police believed that syndicates were also involved in the illegal gambling.

"…Concerns had been mounting in the state last month after a retired civil servant sought police protection from gangsters whom he claimed had threatened to assault him for failing to settle gambling debts at a cybercafe here.

"…Ramli said that police were also curbing loan sharks and gangsters by using the Restricted Residence Act and Emergency Ordinance against them.

"He said there had been reports of loan sharks using gangsters to collect debts…"
