Maine Governor Back Casino Opponents

SANFORD, Maine – As reported by the (York County, Maine) Journal Tribune: "A selectman is urging the community to pull together on the casino issue.

"Gov. John Baldacci, meanwhile, has agreed to be guest speaker at a fund-raiser for casino opponents in Freeport next month.

"The Casinos No! moneymaker, a $250-per-ticket event at the Harraseekett Inn, will formally begin the effort by casino opponents to defeat a statewide November referendum that would legalize casino gambling. They hope to raise $30,000.

"…So far, Sanford is the only southern Maine town that has shown interest in hosting a casino.

"Selectman Roland Cote Tuesday said the town needs to pull together on the issue and refrain from confrontational dialogue and divisiveness. He said there would be plenty of time as the proposal unfolds to express opinions and concerns.

"…There have been no plans submitted on a resort casino proposed by the Penobscot Nation and Passamaquoddy Tribe because the Indians have not acquired any land…"
