Maine Gambling Supporters Raise $1.7 Million

AUGUSTA, Maine – As reported by the Portland Press Herald: "It's a busy referendum year in Maine for campaign committees seeking to sway voters. Through July 15, the various groups collected close to $4 million and that sum is likely to soar as political activity picks up this fall.

"The seemingly bottomless-pocketed effort to win authorization for an Indian casino has been leading the gold rush. Casino backers organized as Think About It reported total receipts of more than $1.7 million through mid-July.

"The principal anti-casino organization, Casinos No!, reported raising just over a third as much money: more than $625,000.

"…Most of the resources of the pro-casino group Think About It have been reported as in-kind contributions from Las Vegas developer Marnell Corrao.

"So far, Casinos No! has reported a $100,000 contribution from credit-card giant MBNA, $50,000 from L.L. Bean and $35,000 from Tom's of Maine…"
