Maine Casino Panel Defines Limits4 September 2002AUGUSTA, Maine -- As reported by the Associated Press: ``As an 18-member task force assessing the impact of a gambling casino in Maine began work Tuesday, a co-chairman admonished members to refrain from grandstanding on the contentious proposal. ```We're not going to decide if there's going to be a casino in Maine,' state Sen. Kevin Shorey said, reminding the task force that its mission is limited to gathering facts and presenting them to the Legislature. ``While promising he `will not squash any opinion at all,' Shorey, R-Perry, told the members that the process is not `a sideshow or circus,' and cautioned against `making a spectacle of this.' ``The task force, made up of lawmakers and representatives of law enforcement, the tourism industry, harness racing, low-income advocates and a mix of other interests, has a lot of work to do in the four meetings allotted. It plans one public hearing. ``Maine's Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Indian tribes want to build a casino and hotel resort in southern Maine. To move forward, they need the approval of the Legislature, which is expected to take up the issue during its 2003 session. ``...The diverse views of members became apparent during the opening meeting. ``...The Maine commission set its next meeting for Sept. 30..." |
