Macau Casinos Pay Bulk of Government Revenues

MACAU-- Casinos in Macao are tipped to pay gaming taxes totaling 7 billion patacas (875 million US dollars) this year, accounting for a bulk of government revenues.

"…Figures released earlier showed that Macao's casinos reaped about 14 billion patacas (US$1.75 billion) in net profits in the first eight months of this year, representing a year-on-year rise of 15 percent.

"In an ambitious move to promote market competition, the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government issued licenses of casino operation to three companies, including Stanley Ho's Macao Gaming Company. But the two new rivals have not yet started business.

"A big difference will be that gaming taxes for casinos will rise marginally to reach 35 percent of their income after the liberalization of the gambling industry on March 31…"
