Macau Casino Licence Bidders Cleared as Fit to Tender

HONG KONG -- Dec. 16, 2001 -- As reported by the (Malaysia) Star: ``All 21 companies that have put in bids for one of Macau's three new casino concessions have been cleared by the SAR government as "fit" to tender.

``After four days of checking the bidders' credentials, all had been accepted to tender for the three casino-operator concessions, said Macau Secretary for Economy and Finance Francis Tam Pak Yuen.

``He said the Casino Tender Commission would ask Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah to extend by three months the present casino concession held by Stanley Ho's Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau (STDM). The company's licence expires at the end of the month.

``South China Morning Post reported that the three-month extension was sufficient to complete the tendering process.

``Previously, the government planned to announce the three winners of the tender by the end of the year. However, the vast amount of tender documents submitted by bidders led to the administration's decision to extend the time allocated to the bidding process.

``Tam also said the commission, which he chairs, would start opening the bidders' proposals on Tuesday and that the evaluation procedure was expected to take one week..."
