Louisiana Legislator Pushes Gaming Negotiation Bills

LOUISIANA – As reported by the Louisiana Advocate: "A Lake Charles legislator is pushing three bills aimed at shedding light on the governor's negotiations over Indian casinos.

"…House Bills 5 and 7 by [Rep. Dan] Flavin would require any new Indian casino to get the approval of a majority of the voters in the parish where it's proposed.

"The Republican Flavin said his proposal tracks the law that now requires parish voters to approve any proposed riverboat casino before it can go into that area.

"The proposal will give the governor an additional tool to gauge public sentiment regarding Indian casinos, Flavin said.

"…Last year, Foster secretly negotiated a deal with the Jena Choctaws that would have allowed the tribe to build a casino near the Texas line near Lake Charles.

"…Flavin's other bill, HB7, would allow the state Gaming Control Board and the two legislative committees that oversee gambling to hold public hearings for any new Indian casino, or any Indian casino that is up for renewal of its agreement with the state…"
