Louisiana, California Have Most Gambling Lobby Groups3 May 2002WASHINGTON, DC – As reported by the (Louisiana) Times-Picayune: "Louisiana doesn't come out No. 1 often, but when it comes to groups with gambling lobbyists, the state is king. "In a new national survey, the state tied California for No. 1, each listing 32 organizations with lobbyists trying to influence their state legislatures on gambling issues, according to the Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan group that evaluates government influence. Nevada, the gambling capital of the world, was third, with 31. "Given Louisiana's riverboat casinos and the array of gambling issues before the Legislature, including last year's bailout legislation for Harrah's New Orleans Casino, the high number of organizations lobbying on gambling wasn't a surprise to some. "…However, Public Integrity, using disclosure forms submitted to the state by lobbying groups, ranks Louisiana low in overall lobbying expenditures, only $400,963, or 29th among the 34 states surveyed. But that's because Louisiana is one of 11 states that doesn't require the salaries paid the lobbyists to be included on state disclosure forms, according to the report. Only states that require lobbying firms to disclose their expenditures were included in the survey…" |
