Loophole Brings Singapore Operators to Malaysia23 May 2003MALAYSIA – As reported by the Malay Mail: "A loophole of sorts in the Malaysian law on gambling has prompted illegal betting centre operators from Singapore to bring their business to Malaysia. "When it is busted, a syndicate can only be fined up to a maximum of RM200,000 (US$52,631) by Malaysian courts. Peanuts, considering the millions of ringgit the syndicate would have made by then. "Besides, unlike in the republic, there is no mandatory jail sentence in Malaysia for gaming offences. "The Malay Mail learnt that to keep the business `safe', syndicates would only accept bets from regular clients. "…Everything is done in codes and the winning prizes are usually higher than that offered by a bona fide business. "Once a betting centre is busted, another one will be set up elsewhere to cater to the demands across the Causeway…" |
