Legal Battle over Online Casino Address25 May 2001AGUA CALIENTE, California –– As reported by the (California) Desert Sun: "The owner of an Antigua-based Internet casino said he had never heard of the Agua Caliente Casino when he bought a Web site address of the same name. "Daniel Faulkner said the name AguaCalienteCasino.com was one of hundreds associated with California he thought would draw traffic to the site CaliforniaCasino.com. "Officials from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians -- owners of the Agua Caliente Casino at the intersection of Ramon Road and Bob Hope Drive near Rancho Mirage -- are trying to acquire the name for their own Web site. "…The owner of the Internet casino said he intends to hang onto the address because it is good for business. "…It was the Agua Caliente County Park in the eastern San Diego County desert -- not the casino -- that inspired Faulkner to register the name, he said. "Officials with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians found out somebody already owned the Internet address months ago when they attempted to register a Web site name for their newest casino. "Only recently did they discover that not only was the name taken, but it was being used to operate another casino online. "Tribal officials would not discuss their legal strategy, but did say they intend to go after the name. "…Faulkner said he didn't plan to sell the name, but would entertain offers. He said he was also surprised that no one from the tribe has contacted him…" |
