Laughlin, Nevada, Reports Boost in Gaming Activity and Tourism2 March 2000Located 90 miles southeast of Las Vegas on the Colorado River, the developing gaming mecca of Laughlin, Nevada, recorded a 3.9 percent increase in visitor volume in 1999. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) also said that Laughlin's gaming revenue increased 8.3 percent. For the year, there were 4.5 million visitors and gaming revenue totaled $532 million. According to Rossi Ralenkotter, vice president of marketing of the LVCVA, last year saw Laughlin record its best numbers since 1994 in terms of visitor volume and gaming revenue. In addition, convention attendance rose 41.8 percent over 1998, to 117,758. "Conventions, meetings and reunions will continue to be an important growth sector for Laughlin" Ralenkotter said. The healthy increases are due to a convergence of factors, the LVCVA said, including the lessening of the impact of Indian gaming and the high repeat visitor count. Special events also have brought new visitors to Laughlin. Some of these events include Laughlin Rodeo Days, April 5-9, which features 600 of the world's best rodeo contestants competing for over $225,000 in prize money. Each year tens of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts come to town for the Laughlin River Run. The 18th annual run will be held April 27-30 this year. Other events, such as the SCORE International Off Road Racing series, are held throughout the year. |
