Las Vegas Bookmakers Lays Odds on Emmy Winners

31 July 2002

LAS VEGAS -- As reported by the Associated Press: ``At least two Las Vegas oddsmakers would put their money on NBC's "The West Wing" to win outstanding drama series in the 54th annual Emmy Awards when it airs Sept. 22 -- if they could.

``Nevada law prohibits wagering on events in which the outcome is already known, but Las Vegas oddsmakers handicap such contests as the Academy Awards or `Survivor' for entertainment purposes.

``Johnny Avello, race and sports book director at Bally's Las Vegas, has even odds on the television show that focuses on the U.S. presidency. Joe Lupo, race and sports book manager at the Stardust hotel-casino, also likes West Wing to win at 2-1 odds.

```I chose West Wing because the show's gained a lot of notoriety this last year, especially with all the political events that have happened. And it's a well-written and well-acted show,' Lupo said.
``…For outstanding comedy series, Avello likes NBC's "Friends" at 8-5, while Lupo has NBC's "Will and Grace" topping the category at 2-1.
``…`Friends' has never won and I think they might get a sentimental vote,' Avello said. `And 'Sex and the City' has won once before. They don't like to give the awards too consistently.'
``For lead actors and actresses, Avello said this year he chose some new faces, including Jane Kaczmarek, who plays the mother on Fox's `Malcolm in the Middle,' as the 9-5 favorite
``…For best dramatic actor, both oddsmakers like Martin Sheen, who plays President Bartlett in "The West Wing." Avello has Sheen at 6-5 to win…"
