La Crosse County Plans Referendum On Ho Chunk Casino18 August 2000LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN – Aug. 18, 2000 – As reported by The Associated Press: "The La Crosse County Board voted Thursday to send plans for a Ho Chunk casino to a referendum as officials in Brown and Lafayette counties continued to vie for a Lac du Flambeau casino. "…La Crosse County Board chair Jim Ehrsam said the board voted 22-9 to put the question on the Nov. 7 ballot after a heated debate in the board's Administrative/Legislative committee. "The Ho Chunk have yet to propose a site. Ersham said the location could be pivotal for the casino. "…A coalition of clergy has formed to urge La Crosse residents to turn away the casino. "…La Crosse voters in 1995 overwhelmingly turned down a Lac du Flambeau casino plan, but Ehrsam said the board felt a different band should have a separate vote. "…Local officials have said the Ho Chunk have discussed paying the county and city $2 million each annually in lieu of property taxes. |
