Kentucky Riverboat Gambling Bill Likely Filed10 December 2001KENTUCKY – Dec. 10, 2001 --As the idea of legalizing alternative gambling in Kentucky to help the Thoroughbred industry continues to gain support among the state's horsemen, Lieutenant Governor Steve Henry said a bill to legalize riverboat gambling in the state is likely to be filed with the Kentucky General Assembly. "Henry said the bill would help keep revenue inside the state that is currently going to riverboats and racetracks with casino gambling in surrounding states by Kentucky residents. "…Governor Paul Patton has stepped back from the issue of expanded gambling in the state though representatives of the state's racing industry—who were once opposed to expanded gambling in 1999 when proposed by Patton in the form of 14 land-based casinos--claim the sport is losing customers to riverboat casino in Indiana and Illinois. "…Churchill Downs President Alex Waldrop said Kentucky's racing industry officials are continuing to craft a bill that will most likely seek support for some type of casino gambling in the state, possibly video lottery terminals that would offer, poker, blackjack, and other games. "…Patton has agreed that Kentucky racetracks have a legitimate issue when it comes to competition, but pointed out that the racing industry knew gambling was coming to the Ohio River for years…" |
