Kansas Gambling Supports Rally for Expanded Gaming12 March 2003KANSAS CITY, Kansas – As reported by the Kansas City Star: "This is the year, gambling proponents say, that casino gaming in Kansas will expand beyond the borders of Indian reservations. "…Supporters of gaming have a governor who is behind them, a state budget problem that is only getting worse and lawmakers who may find the prospect of skimming off some of the profits from casinos too hard to resist. Eight bills before the legislature would allow gambling outside the four casinos run by American Indian tribes in northeast Kansas. "Three of the bills would allow slot machines at dog and horse tracks. Supporters say that could generate $100 million a year in state revenue. One bill would legalize instant-pay video lottery games at convenience stores and other outlets that sell Kansas Lottery tickets. Lottery officials have estimated that those games could raise $300 million a year. "Robin Jennison, former House speaker turned gambling lobbyist, said last fall's election increased the number of pro-gambling votes in the House. "…The best deal, potentially, for the state is the bill that allows up to five video lottery games per site at convenience stores…" |
