Israel Considers Opening Casino29 November 2001ISRAEL –- Nov. 28, 2001 –- As reported by the Jerusalem Post: "Tourism Minister Benny Elon, who until now has been firmly opposed to the establishment of a gambling casino in Israel, said today that he was open to an examination of the issue. "Speaking at a press conference at the Eilat Promotion Conference presently taking place in the Red Sea resort, Elon was relating to an announcement by Eilat Mayor Gabi Kadosh on Tuesday that Eilat was negotiating with the Austrian operators of the former Oasis Casino in Jericho, who were interested in opening a floating casino outside Israel's territorial waters in the Red Sea. "…Elon, who like other religious Knesset Members, had opposed a casino in Israel, said that he was aware that many saw a casino as an attraction, but he did not know how urgently it was needed or how much of an advantage it would give Israel over other developing countries, especially taking into consideration the negative aspects. "…The Tourism Minister spoke with enthusiasm about what he saw as the tendency for more and more Israelis to vacation at home…" |
