Iowa Grandmother Pleads Guilty to Lottery Theft

7 August 2001

IOWA –– As reported by the [Iowa] Hawk Eye: "An elderly woman bowed her head and wept softly Monday as she admitted to a judge she stole her granddaughter's winning $100,000 lottery ticket.

"Vera L. Stanturf, 85, Sperry, pleaded guilty to first-degree theft in Des Moines County District Court.

"…Attorney Mitch Taylor of Burlington told the judge Stanturf was ready to take responsibility for the Feb. 21 theft of a Powerball ticket bought as one of several by her granddaughter, Melony Bergquist.

"Bergquist works at the plant, and is one of about 50 employees pooling their money to regularly buy lottery tickets from a Mediapolis store. Stanturf lives with Bergquist.

"…The judge warned Stanturf she could face up to 10 years in prison, although Assistant County Attorney Mike Bennett recommended deferred judgment and probation -- a measure that would allow the slate to be wiped clean if there are no further transgressions.

"…Bennett said about $60,000 of the money Stanturf got from the Iowa Lottery office in Cedar Rapids has been recovered…"
