Iowa County at Odds Over Gambling

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Nancy Davis had just hit a $5,000 jackpot on one of the slot machines at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino.

"…Davis, a self-described high roller at Prairie Meadows, seemed complacent. A $5,000 hit on a slot machine doesn't happen all that often, but Davis acted as if she had just crossed the street without getting hit.

"`I am conflicted about this place, I really am,' she said. `I come out here a few times a week and spend a lot of money - way too much money. But I keep coming out here. I really wonder why sometimes, particularly after I've had a bad night.'

"Like Davis, many Polk County residents remain conflicted about gambling, although most support continued betting at Prairie Meadows.
