Internet Privacy Regulation Will Harm Digital Opportunity, Trade Group Says3 March 2000In a letter today to U.S. Secretary of Commerce William Daley, the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) cautioned the Department of Commerce against rushing to regulate the Internet in light of recent consumer privacy concerns. The letter is the result of recent accounts linking the Commerce Department to proposals by the Federal Trade Commission to regulate Internet advertising. ITAA told the department that regulating privacy and advertisers could undermine the ability of providers to offer free content. "We fear that seemingly well-meaning regulatory initiatives on privacy could have a chilling effect on web use by middle and low income Americans, who would be forced to choose between subscription-based content or access and no content or access," said ITAA President Harris N. Miller. ITAA also told the Commerce Department that current industry self-regulatory practices -- which ITAA helped develop through the Online Privacy Alliance -- combined with existing laws and technology innovations such as the Platform for Privacy Preferences, are enough to ensure consumer privacy on the web. The ITAA provides global public policy, business networking, and national leadership to promote the continued rapid growth of the IT industry. The organization consists of 400 direct and 26,000 affiliate corporate members throughout the U.S., and a network of IT associations from 39 countries. |
