Initial Lotto South Sales Disappointing19 November 2001LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Nov. 19, 2001 –As reported by the (Owensboro, Kentucky) Messenger-Inquirer: " With nonstop, commercial-free coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks airing on television and radio, Lotto South's first drawing the same week drew little notice. "Lotto South sales were $4.74 million in its first nine weeks, $1.4 million below expectations. "The game, offered in partnership with Georgia and Virginia, went on sale Sept. 9 and had its first drawing Sept. 12. "…At their monthly meeting Friday, lottery board members and executives offered a variety of reasons for the disappointing sales. They blamed the lack of an attention-getting big jackpot, tighter consumer budgets because of the money people gave to the relief effort and overly optimistic projections. Sales of lottery tickets fell in the week after the terrorist attacks but rebounded in October. "And because of record sales in August, thanks to a $295 million Powerball jackpot, the Kentucky Lottery reported that the first four months of fiscal year 2002 were `outstanding.'
