Indiana Committee Plan Calls for Keno

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – As reported by the Louisville, Kentucky Courier-Journal: "The budget bill passed yesterday by a House committee would require the Hoosier Lottery to launch keno, a fast-paced game typically played in bars that is a sort of a cross between bingo and the Powerball.

"House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Crawford, D-Indianapolis, said wagering on the game could mean an additional $45 million for the state budget, cash that is greatly needed given the state's desperate economic situation.

"But gambling opponents said the budget should not depend on such revenue.

"…Nine states have legalized the kind of keno games that House Democrats have envisioned, said Jack Ross, director of the Hoosier Lottery. In most of those states, drawings for the games take place every four or five minutes.

"…In states where the game is legal, it is typically available in bars and taverns -- locations that don't generally sell lottery tickets, Ross said. The Hoosier Lottery estimates that if introduced in Indiana, 1,500 locations might offer the game.

"…The game's fast-paced style separates it from other lottery games, and experts on problem gambling have said that makes it more addictive…"
