Illinois Regulators Want Casinos to Offer Checks

ILLINOIS – As reported by the Chicago Sun-Time: "In the wake of several robberies, state regulators are asking Illinois' casinos to do a better job informing gamblers that they might be able to receive winnings in a check instead of cash.

"`This is a public-safety issue,' said Illinois Gaming Board Administrator Philip C. Parenti. `We want to make sure the casinos advertise their policy. We believe there's a lot of patrons that get cash winnings that don't know they can get a check.'

"The move to make gamblers more aware of check payouts comes after four people were accused last week of robbing a half-dozen people who gambled at Harrah's Casino in Joliet. The four, police said, identified the victims inside the casino and followed them to their homes to rob them, typically in the early-morning hours.

"…A Gaming Board analysis found that all casinos can issue checks to patrons, but that two of them do so only during regular business hours, stopping after 6 p.m. Another casino required a minimum $1,000 to be changed out for a check to be written.

"…Parenti plans to discuss standardizing the ways casinos issue checks at a coming meeting with casino general managers…"
