Ilitch Plans to Expand Casino Empire

MICHIGAN – As reported by Crain's Detroit: "Marian Ilitch has casino aspirations well beyond her sole ownership of Detroit's MotorCity Casino L.L.C.

"Along with Michael Malik, one of her former partners in MotorCity, she is backing Indian casino bids on both coasts.

"Gateway Funding Associates L.L.C., a Michigan corporation controlled by Ilitch and Malik, is bankrolling a controversial federal land claim lawsuit filed June 15 by a New York Indian tribe against a wealthy Long Island community.

"Gateway signed an agreement in 2004 with the Shinnecock Nation to support the tribe's bid to reclaim 3,600 acres around Southampton near the eastern tip of Long Island, said Tom Shields, a spokesman for Ilitch and Malik. If the tribe succeeds, it could build a casino on the land.

"…Ilitch and Malik also are backing a casino venture of the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla American Indians in northern San Diego County.

"…In New York, the Shinnecock project faces some big hurdles before the tribe can develop anything…"
