House Overrides Wyoming Governor's Veto of Gambling Bill23 February 2001CHEYENNE, Wyoming -- Feb. 23, 2001 – As reported by the Associated Press: ``The House overrode Gov. Jim Geringer's veto of a bill that would allow gambling on out-of-state dog racing. ``The vote was 43-17, or three more than the two-thirds necessary to override a veto. If two-thirds of the Senate votes Friday to override, the measure becomes law. ``In his veto message, the governor expressed concern that allowing pari-mutuel wagering on simulcast greyhound racing would bolster the Northern Arapaho tribe's lawsuit against the state. ``...Geringer also objected because he believes most residents do not support more gambling, citing voters' rejection of limited-stakes casino gambling in 1994. ``Rep. Bill Stafford, R-Chugwater, sponsor of House Bill 19, disagreed with the governor's view that the measure would expand gaming. He said residents can currently bet on simulcast horse races. "`It is not a new form of gambling like the governor stated in his veto message. Simulcasting is simulcasting whether it's dogs or horses or pigs,' he said after the vote..." |
