Horse That Raced in Five Countries is Retired after Injury19 September 2001NEW YORK -- As reported by the (U.K.) Racing Post: "Globetrotting mare Ela Athena has been retired after suffering an injury when third in the Grade 1 Man o' War Stakes at Belmont Park earlier this month. "The five-year-old, winner of three of her 17 races and £736,298 ($1.1 million) in prize-money, will remain in the States to be covered. "Although last year's Group 3 Lancashire Oaks was her biggest success, the daughter of Ezzoud finished runner-up in no fewer than five Group or Grade 1 races. "…Ela Athena was bred by Mtoto's breeder John Moore at Biddestone Stud and started her career carrying the colours of Andreas Michael. "Unraced at two, she ran four times as a three-year-old in 1999, winning twice including the Listed Golden Daffodil Stakes at Chepstow and finishing second to Ramruma in the Yorkshire Oaks to Ramruma. "She ran in five different countries during last year and filled second place in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood behind Crimplene, the Man o' War Stakes behind Fantastic Light and the Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin behind Daliapour…" |
