Hong Kong Surfers Stay Online Longest28 December 2000Hong Kong surfers are the world's most avid, spending more than 10 hours a month online, according to a new study by media research company, AC Nielsen [NYSE: ART]. A Reuters report today said Nielsen tracked the surfing habits of Web users in 18 countries in October and found that Hong Kong inhabitants spend an average of 10 hours and 13 minutes a month on the Internet, while the average US surfer spent a mere 10 hours and four minutes monthly, with Canada showing third and clocking eight hours and 58 minutes a month. But in analyzing their findings, Nielsen said it believes Americans are generally more mature surfers than Hong Kong residents, which explains why they spent less time online. "In these formative stages, they (Hong Kong surfers) are still learning how to use the Net as an information tool," Reuters quoted Hugh Bloch, manager of Nielsen unit eRatings.com, as saying. Bloch added that US surfers were refining their habits and going to fewer sites, but remaining on them for longer periods of time. This reflects in the average 720 monthly page views for US surfers, the fourth highest, compared with Hong Kong, which topped out at 870 average page views a month. In page view averages, Germany and Japan, with monthly averages of 802 and 792, respectively, were second and third. Reported by Newsbytes, www.newsbytes.com. |
