Hong Kong Police Arrest Gang Suspects On a Floating Casino

5 March 2001

HONG KONG – March 5, 2001 – As reported by the Associated Press: ``Police said Sunday they have smashed a suspected triad, or Chinese gang, with the arrest of 100 men in a raid on a gambling boat in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor.

``The suspects were nabbed Friday in a raid by 140 police officers on the boat Jin Hu, which is sometimes used as a floating casino, said Tsang Wai-hung, chief superintendent of the police's organized crime and triad bureau.

``Tsang said those arrested were believed to be the ringleaders of the Shui Fong triad.

``The suspects, ranging in age from 15 to 82, were believed to be attending a meeting to appoint a new leader.

``…Police said they have enough evidence to charge at least 15 of the suspects with taking part in triad activities.

``…Triad-related crimes have declined in the past decade in Hong Kong because of police crackdowns, Tsang said."
