Head of Illegal Gambling Ring Sentenced30 January 2003AKRON, Ohio – As reported by the (Ohio) Tribune-Chronicle: "The man investigators called the 'big fish' behind an illegal gambling scheme that operated out of General Motors Corp.'s Lordstown fabricating plant will do six months in jail. "The FBI investigators said they believe this man was connected to the top Cleveland organized crime family and was allowed to operate this gambling ring by paying tribute to the mob boss. "Joseph B. 'Joe Capp' Cupido, 62, of Niles was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court for heading a gambling ring that involved a sports bookmaking and lottery scheme. District Judge James S. Gwin sentenced Cupido to two six-month jail term, which will run concurrently, to be followed by six months of home confinement. "…Before sentencing, Cupido's attorney Robert Shaker asked the judge Wednesday to consider that his client had no prior criminal record and suffered from health problems. Cupido apologized to the judge and said he had problems with gambling and alcohol. "'I blew a marriage with my gambling and lost my kids,' Cupido said to the judge. "…Warren police Detective Jeff Hoolihan, who worked this case as part of an FBI task force and was present at the sentencing, said Cupido was one of the 'big fish' in the local gambling scene. "…Investigators said Cupido was responsible for heading up an operation that consisted of football pools and a lottery numbers racket with fabricating plant employees from 1996 to November 2001…" |
