Hazelden's Gambling Video Receives Prestigious Time Inc Health FREDDIE Award

26 September 2000

CENTER CITY, Minnesota--(Press Release)--Sept. 26, 2000--Representatives of the Hazelden Foundation will attend Time Inc Health's 2000 International Health and Medical Media Awards Ceremony in New York City on November 10-11 to receive the prestigious FREDDIE Award for ``Gambling: It's Not About The Money,'' a dramatic and educational documentary which highlights the experience, strength, and hope of a diverse group of recovering gamblers, interviews with two gambling experts, and some mind-boggling statistics about gambling addiction in America.

This international competition attracts documentaries, feature-length films, series, shorts, videos, and new media dedicated to exploring the whole range of health-related issues that change people's lives.

The rigorous judging--conducted by medical and production professionals from across the country--has become the industry standard. World-class filmmakers and producers compete in 35 categories for the FREDDIE, the competition's bronze statue which is named in honor of the competition's founder, Dr. Fred Gottlieb.

``We're very excited about receiving Time Inc's award in their Behavioral Diseases category,'' said Alexis Scott, Producer in Hazelden Information and Educational Services and executive producer of this video.

``Our videos are held to the highest standards--high production values, current research-based content, a deep understanding of the audience --and have been frequently recognized by industry video awards. However, the FREDDIE is like the Oscar of health videos, and we consider receiving it an enormous honor.''

Scott credits the production team for the success of ``Gambling,'' ``Our video projects are successful because we have passionate people creating in a highly collaborative environment,'' declares Scott.

For ``Gambling,'' she cites key contributors Karen Chernyaev, Hazelden's content editor, production company Blue Moon, the University of Minnesota Medical School's Randy Stinchfield, and several organizations including Gambler's Choice and the Minnesota Gambling Hotline. ``And, above all, the generous--and courageous--men and women who told their stories.''

According to Clay Garner, Executive Vice President at Hazelden IES, the video exemplifies Hazelden's commitment as a thought-leader in health-related issues. ``Hazelden continues as a pioneer in developing tools and resources for a whole range of health problems.''

In addition to their continued work in alcohol and drug addiction prevention and recovery, some of Hazelden's other focal issues in recent years have included nicotine, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Hepatitis C, and HIV.

While the recognition from Time Inc Health is extremely meaningful, the bottom line for Hazelden, says Scott, is helping people. ``Our feedback from professionals in the field is that this video is having a measurable impact, and that's our greatest reward.''
