Harrah's, Rhode Island Tribe to Pursue Casino Project

RHODE ISLAND – As reported by the Associated Press: "The Narragansett Indians have a new Las Vegas-based financial backer in their bid to develop a casino in Rhode Island.

"Harrah's Entertainment Inc. has agreed to pursue development of a casino-entertainment resort in the state with the tribe.

"Harrah's is a rival of the tribe's former Nevada-based backer, Boyd Gaming Corp. Earlier this year, the tribe and Boyd accused Harrah's of trying to derail their casino plans.

"…The tribe says it won't announce specific plans until after a House study commission on gambling reports back to the General Assembly in the spring.

"…The tribe expects the same cut of profits from a casino as it would have gotten from Boyd.

"…The tribe hopes Republican Gov.-elect Don Carcieri and new House leaders will be more receptive to a casino in the state than their predecessors.

"…Harrah's is also exploring opportunities for a casino in Massachusetts and several other states…"
