Harrah's One of America's Five Best IT Workplaces

21 June 2000

LAS VEGAS, June 20 (Press Release) -- For the second consecutive year, Harrah's Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: HET - news) is ranked among the Top Five of America's ``100 Best Places to Work in Information Technology,'' according to the June 5 edition of Computerworld newspaper.

Harrah's is the only company in any industry that achieved a Top Five rating for each of the past two years in Computerworld's survey. Harrah's is also the only casino company listed among the Top 100 IT workplaces in either of the past two years. The survey is conducted annually among companies that excel at finding and keeping IT talent.

``It's extremely gratifying to achieve this recognition of our efforts to create an exciting and rewarding work environment for our IT talent,'' said Phil Satre, Harrah's Entertainment Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

``The recruitment and retention of highly qualified and motivated professionals have enabled us to capitalize on the state-of-the-art IT tools we've assembled in building the leading consumer-marketing company in the gaming industry.''

John Boushy, the Company's Senior Vice President of IT and Brand Operations, said Harrah's Entertainment's investment in technology and IT recruitment plays a key role in the Company's information-technology efforts, which are instrumental in driving double-digit same-store sales growth.

``We've been able to implement sophisticated marketing and customer-loyalty programs by capturing and accurately analyzing information contained in our ever-growing database of 19 million Harrah's customers,'' Boushy said. ``I am proud that Computerworld has recognized Harrah's as having not just the right IT tools, but the right environment in which IT professionals can thrive and create huge value for Harrah's.''

In the newspaper's June 5 edition, David Weldon, Senior Editor/Careers for Computerworld, described the keys to retaining IT professionals:

Treat workers with respect.

Listen to ideas.

Be flexible with workers' job responsibilities, hours and working conditions.

Provide them with training and education to stay current in the field.

Give them access to interesting work and technologies.

Allow workers to take charge of their own careers.

Make the office a fun place.

``When a company can meet these terms, it simply becomes too attractive to leave,'' Weldon wrote.

Harrah's Entertainment's fourth-place ranking this year followed 1999's second-place rating on Computerworld's ``100 Best Place to Work in IT'' list. This year's other Top Five finishers included retailer The Home Depot, Inc., specialty chemicals maker Cabot Corp., Federal Express Corp. and Texas Instruments Inc.

Founded more than 60 years ago, Harrah's Entertainment, Inc. is the most recognized and respected name in the casino entertainment industry, operating 21 casinos in 17 markets in the United States under the Harrah's, Showboat and Rio brand names. With a combined database of more than 19 million players, Harrah's is focused on building loyalty and value with its targeted customers through a unique combination of great service, excellent products, unsurpassed distribution, operational excellence and technology leadership.
