Harrah's Employees Claim Cutbacks Since Tax Deal

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – May 25, 2001 –As reported by the Picayune Item: "Although Harrah's New Orleans Casino was supposed to guarantee jobs in exchange for a state tax reduction, no one in the administration of Gov. Mike Foster found out how many workers were employed before the deal was cut.

"In March, the casino got a reduction in its minimum annual state tax from $100 million to $50 million. The casino is required to maintain at least 90 percent of the work force and payroll that existed on March 8, the day the gambling hall and the state signed a new contract.

"The question of exactly how many people were on the payroll on that date could be important if Harrah's is cutting back on employee hours. A local union organizing official says he is hearing from workers that their hours are being reduced.

"…The union trying to organize the city's tourism industry said it has had calls from Harrah's employees over the past two weeks saying their hours are being cut…"
