Hall of Fame Jockey Picks Kentucky Derby Favorites for Charity24 April 2003EDMOND, Oklahoma -- (Press Release) -- When it comes to picking winners for the Kentucky Derby, there is no better person than legendary jockey and four-time Derby winner Bill Shoemaker. He has teamed up with information provider TipShop.com to release his picks for the 129th "Run for the Roses" May 3rd. Shoemaker will offer his expert insights and winning picks to raise money for the Shoemaker Foundation. The Shoemaker Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those in the horse racing industry who have had a catastrophic accident or illness and need additional help once their insurance and workers compensation run out. Since its inception in 1991, the Shoemaker Foundation has assisted over 400 individuals and their families. In 42 years of racing, Bill Shoemaker achieved an incredible 8,833 wins. During his career, his mounts earned $123,375,524 in purses, claimed 1,000 stakes races and captured 11 Triple Crown races. After his illustrious career, Shoemaker shifted into a new venture as a trainer, only to have it cut short by an auto accident in which he was paralyzed. Despite being confined to a wheelchair, Shoemaker remained focused on his desire to return to a full life, including training that he resumed in a supervisory role until 1997. "Bill knows a lot about winning in horse racing and life. We are excited about the opportunity to assist him in this worthwhile cause," said Carol Leese, President of Tipshop.com. Shoemaker's winning Derby selections can only be accessed and purchased at www.Tipshop.com . Net proceeds from revenue generated will go directly to The Shoemaker Foundation. |
