Groups Protest Drive for Slot Machines at Race Tracks24 July 2001FLORIDA – July 24, 2001 – As reported by the (Florida) Sun-Sentinel: "The contest has begun between the South Florida pari-mutuel industry and its foes over a drive to permit slot machines at race tracks and jai-alai frontons throughout the state. "A coalition, including the state's leading anti-gambling group and four animal rights organizations, says a ballot initiative allowing slot machines in the state's 24 pari-mutuel facilities fails to warn voters about the potential expansion of Indian gaming should the measure pass a statewide referendum. "…Three South Florida facilities -- Flagler Greyhound Track in Miami, Pompano Park harness track in Pompano Beach and the Hollywood Greyhound Track in Hallandale Beach -- are leading the drive to put the question to voters in November 2002. If approved, the amendment would allow counties to hold their own referendum to allow slot machines at existing pari-mutuel facilities.
