Groups Align to Fight Minnesota Gaming Expansion15 February 2002ST. PAUL, Minnesota – As reported by the Associated Press: "Opposition to proposals to expand legalized gambling in Minnesota is coming from both sides of the political spectrum. "Liberal and conservative groups came together Thursday to speak against a growing list of gambling bills before the Legislature. "…On Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Dick Day, R-Owatonna, unveiled a bill to put slot machines in a casino at Canterbury Park racetrack. On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Roger Moe, DFL-Erskine, threw his support behind a different bill to build a state-owned casino at or near the Mall of America. "…The anti-gambling group includes representatives from: the Joint Religious Coalition; the Minnesota Taxpayers League; the Minnesota Family Council; the Center of the American Experiment; and Minnesotans Against Gambling. "They argue that gambling is regressive. That means low-income people spend a higher percentage of their income on gambling losses than richer people do." |
