Group Charged in Huge Lottery Scam9 December 2002British Columbia, Canada – As reported by the Vancouver Sun: ``Five Lower Mainland residents were released on bail Thursday after they were arrested to face extradition to the U.S., where they are accused of defrauding elderly citizens of more than $100 million in a lottery-ticket scheme. ``Alvin Irwin Moss of Vancouver was identified as the alleged head of the international organization that ran the scam, which claimed to have a psychic who had selected lottery numbers that were sure to win at least $50,000. ``Police are seeking to arrest Moss, but he is not in custody, George Bolds of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Memphis, Tenn., said Thursday. ``…Moss and his relatives were among eight Canadians of 17 people charged with mail fraud, money laundering, smuggling and racketeering. ``…It is alleged the perpetrators of the scam lived lavish lifestyles, used more than 30 businesses, including offices in Vancouver and Richmond, and caused "thousands of citizens to forward in excess of $100 million to the defendants and their associates." ``Those involved in the enterprise used promotional material that said a psychic had chosen certain lottery numbers that were winners. Customers were promised that if the numbers failed to win at least $50,000, they would be entitled to 2,000 free lottery tickets…" |
