Ground Broken on Mississippi Tribe's Casino, Hotel17 November 2000PHILADELPHIA, Mississippi – As reported by the Mississippi Sun Herald: "The evolution of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians from an industrial manufacturing economy to a resort economy took a major step Thursday when the tribe broke ground on its Golden Moon Hotel & Casino just outside Philadelphia in Neshoba County. "…The Golden Moon, a 280-acre recreational lake, a cultural center, the Pear River Town Center business park and a 300-room lakefront hotel are all expected to be completed by 2002. "An amphitheater, fairgrounds, a water park and a university style fitness and health center also will be developed. "Choctaw enterprises, which include printing, plastic molding, greeting card and automobile plants in Mississippi and Mexico, employ more than 6,700 people. "But Chief Phillip Martin is not satisfied. "`We want to go from low-tech and manufacturing jobs to higher paying resort industry jobs,' said Martin, who at 74 is in his sixth, four-year term as chief. `We want to build a total resort community.'…" |
