Greyhound Owners Say Governor's Plan Would Mean End of Racing

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – As reported by the Associated Press: ``Greyhound owners say the governor's plan to eliminate their share of video lottery terminal profits could mean the end of dog racing in Rhode Island.

``When lawmakers allowed the introduction of video lottery terminals, or VLTs, in 1992, they gave the greyhound owners a cut of the profits.

``While wagering on the dogs has steadily fallen, the money the owners make from VLTs has grown.

``That's happened even as the percentage of VLT profits going to the owners has dropped. In 1993, the greyhound owners' share was $1.1 million.

``…The Greyhound owners and Lincoln Park's CEO Dan Bucci said Gov. Don Carcieri's proposal to cut out kennel and dog owners from any share of VLT profits would lead to the demise of racing at Lincoln Park.

``…While the dog owners say the complete loss of VLT money would decimate their business, Carcieri says he's willing to take the risk…”
