Greektown Casino Banks on Hometown Appeal7 September 2000DETROIT, MICHIGAN – Sept. 7, 2000 – As reported by The Detroit Free Press: "…It may be viewed as the underdog among Detroit's three temporary casinos, which also include the MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity casinos. "But its owners say Greektown is the hometown casino and will do well despite opening more than a year after the city's first casino. Greektown is in a neighborhood people have been coming to for years, on a handy People Mover stop and owned by Michigan residents. "Most of those who come to the casino will be locals who will come back if they're treated well, said Salvatore Semola, vice president for table games. "Semola came to Detroit in 1998 to work for MotorCity but decided to work for Greektown instead. "…The casino breaks many industry rules. It features a glass atrium, an outdoor patio, windows in many gambling rooms, women dressed in long gowns rather than skimpy outfits, no buffet, and restaurants and stores that front directly on busy Monroe Street. "…The casino will have a nonsmoking slot machine room with a skylight and windows, a sports bar with slot machines, and the plush, secluded Pantheon Club for high-spending gamblers. "…The $200-million Greektown Casino, 90-percent owned by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is expected to open to the public Nov. 10…" |
