GREECE GOVERNMENT AGAINST GAMING MACHINES28 May 2002Five months ago, an unlisenced slot-machine scandal damaged the governing socialists as a Socialist deputy was video-taped playing on unlicensed slot machines. Month later, the government announced its'' intentions to ban all kinds of arcade games, even those popular with children, claiming each and every machine can be used for gambling purposes. The current bill is far from being extreme as that, and does not forbid technical playing for entertainment. It regards all electronic and mechanical games which operate on luck or include wagering and money. Violators of the ban face $4,600 fine and a minimum three-month prison sentence, while repeat violators face a minimum one year in prison and a fine rup to $69,000! As for the owners, each machince will cost them $9,200 fine. If the bill passes, arcade license taxes estimated $27.6 million a year, will no longer be paid to the government. Currently no deadline is set for discussion or vote. |
