The following is an excerpt from Chairman Ross J. McLeod's address at the Company's Annual General Meeting of the shareholders held June 9, 2000: "The future looks bright to me as we pursue new ventures and opportunities in local, Canadian, US and global markets. Our commitment to our shareholders and enhancing shareholder value is, and still remains, my focus as we expand our horizons and grow beyond BC's borders. We announced last year that we were beginning the process of expansion beyond our province, and today I can say to you that we have completed the first of what will undoubtedly be many business ventures outside of British Columbia. We have formed a partnership with a proven local gaming establishment, Evergreen Entertainment in Tukwila Washington, and we are currently pursuing other opportunities with our joint venture partners. The gaming marketplace in Alberta is of great interest to us. We are seeking to position ourselves in this exciting neighbouring market, and I am confident that our dedicated and highly skilled management team, under the direction of our new Board, will enable us to expand and flourish in Alberta. We are actively pursuing gaming opportunities in Southeast Asia; particularly as it pertains to the lucrative Hong Kong pleasure cruise gaming market and industry. On the local front, Great Canadian has had two separate issues to deal with: One - the City of Surrey's reluctance to issue us a business licence; and two - their enforcement of a by-law prohibiting slot machines in the casino. I am happy to announce that Great Canadian has successfully fought and won both of these battles through the B.C. courts. Even with these wins under our belt, we have decided to look for a more suitable location for a full-service casino; one that would allow us to grow from the 191 slot machines currently in Surrey to the 300 slot machines allowed under the provincial gaming regulations. We believe that this location is in Coquitlam and, as such, are working with the City Council and provincial authorities to bring an exciting entertainment option to the City in early 2001. On Vancouver Island, we are currently working with City officials in the municipality of View Royal to work hand in hand and establish a first class, profitable gaming facility. This facility will include both table games and slot machines which would benefit the municipality and also provide much needed tourism revenue and some 300 local jobs. I am proud of the team we have assembled at Great Canadian Gaming. Our proven track record in British Columbia will enable us to expand and prosper in new and exciting gaming markets. With strong team leadership and dedicated staff, guided by our Board of Directors, Great Canadian expects to grow and prosper in this new century." |
