Governor Presents Pennsylvania's First Powerball Jackpot18 November 2002MIDDLETOWN, Pennsylvania --(Press Release) --On Tuesday, November 19, 2002, Governor Mark Schweiker will present a check for $30,786,773.73 cash - less 27 percent federal withholding - to the Pennsylvania Lottery's first Powerball jackpot prize winner. This is the largest, single, one-time cash winnings payment the Pennsylvania Lottery has made in its 30-year history. Governor Schweiker will present Edward Varley, 74, of Hatfield, Montgomery County, his Powerball winnings check at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Hatfield Texaco, located at 2401 Bethlehem Pike in Hatfield. Assisting the Governor will be Secretary of Revenue Larry P. Williams and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Robert Mars. Hosting the event will be Hatfield Texaco owners Shailesh Bhalala and Gutham Patel and store manager Rick Patel. In addition to Mr. Varley's prize, Hatfield Texaco will receive a check from the Pennsylvania Lottery for $258,750 for selling the winning jackpot ticket. The Pennsylvania Lottery remains the only state Lottery that designates its proceeds to benefit older citizens. Since inception more than 30 years ago, the Lottery has contributed $12.9 billion to programs that have expanded to include property tax and rent rebates, free and reduced fare transit for older Pennsylvanians, a co-pay prescription drug program (PACE and PACENET) and the 52 Area Agencies on Aging, including 650 full- and part-time senior centers, located throughout Pennsylvania. |
