Governor Bush to Decide on Poker Rooms Today5 August 2003TALLAHASSEE, Florida – As reported by the South-Florida Sun Sentinel: “Gambling opponents were watching Tuesday to see whether Gov. Jeb Bush would sign a bill they fear will increase the payouts dramatically at poker rooms at dog tracks and other pari-mutuel betting operations. “Track proprietors, who say they are losing customers to other forms of legal gambling, were also closely watching. The governor has until midnight Tuesday to either sign or veto the bill, or let it become law without his signature. “The measure (HB 1059) would eliminate the current $10 per game pot limit in track card rooms and replace it with a $2 bet limit and a maximum of three raises per round. But the number of rounds wouldn't be limited and legislative staff estimated players could win as much as $200 under the measure. “That troubles anti-gambling groups who have urged Bush to veto the bill. They've been joined by a group that opposes greyhound racing, which says that the measure will save dog tracks that otherwise would go broke. Florida has a third of all North America's greyhound tracks…” |
