Government Reverses Recognition of Nipmuc Tribes

28 September 2001

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– As reported by the Associated Press: "The Nipmuc Indians have failed to meet the criteria for federal recognition as tribes, dealing a setback for one of the branch's controversial plans to open a gambling casino in New England.

"In a reversal of an earlier ruling, the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs concluded that neither the Nipmuc Nation nor the Webster/Dudley Band of Chaubunagungamaug Nipmucks satisfied the federal requirements.

"…Lakes Gaming Inc. of Minnesota signed a seven-year contract with the Nipmucs of Sutton, Mass., to build a casino. The tribe was considering sites in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and Union, Connecticut The proposal has drawn opposition in both states.

"…New England already has two casinos, and various tribes have advanced proposals for at least four more."
