Golisano Hits Pataki On Legalized Gambling

30 August 1998

BUFFALO, N.Y – In a campaign swing through Buffalo on August 28, Independence Party Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Golisano hit the Pataki administration hard on fiscal policy and, among several challenges, called for legalized gambling in New York.

Golisano criticized politicians for ignoring the voters in preventing the issue of legalized gambling from coming to a vote in a public referendum last year. "Why should Donald Trump—one man—decide whether New York State should have legalized gambling?" Golisano asked. "Campaign contributions pouring into Albany should not take the place of a public referendum on this issue. As it stands right now, they have."

A cofounder of the Independence Party in 1993, Golisano was the party's candidate for governor in 1994. Despite the initiation of several lawsuits by the Republican Party to prevent Golisano from being on the ballot, he garnered 217,000 votes. These results guaranteed the fast-growing party the fourth line on the state's election ballot.
