Georgia Governor Signs Video Poker Ban19 September 2001ATLANTA, Georgia – Sept. 19, 2001 –As reported by the Savannah Morning News: "Without fanfare, Gov. Roy Barnes signed legislation last weekend banning video poker in Georgia, quietly ending what had, at times, been a raucous debate over the machines' fate. "…Legislative Republicans first raised video poker as an issue last winter, only to see their bid to ban the machines shot down when a brief filibuster during the final minutes of the session prevented a vote. "…He decided not to have a signing ceremony for the bill because a good time couldn't be found in the aftermath of last week's terrorist attacks, said Joselyn Butler, the governor's spokeswoman. "The law gives machine operators until Jan. 1 to remove the games from public places. State licenses for the machines last until the end of this year." |
